Paris Hilton detained in South Africa for smoking pot?

Interrupting Paris Hilton's recent tweets spouting her love of South Africa (and life in general) is a brush with the law on suspicion of marijuana possession. A Johannesburg radio station reported that Hilton was detained outside the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium after the Brazil-Netherlands quarterfinals. Two South African police officers, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed that Hilton did have marijuana in her possession and that an investigation was underway. However, it seems that a South African judge has dropped the charges. Good thing. I'd have hated for Paris to miss the upcoming Safari she tweeted about just a few short days ago!

Will Oscar finally crack its glass ceiling?

Yep, it's that time of year again: time to see who'll top the worst-dressed list, who'll deliver the sappiest acceptance speech, and just how many trophies The Hurt Locker will take home. But, there's a big difference between who'll win and who should. While there is a 3-way heat for Best Picture between The Hurt Locker, Inglorious Basterds and Avatar, and it is widely thought that Inglorious Basterds "should" win, it is also a well known fact that Avatar's mastermind James Cameron, and Inglourious Basterds' writer/director, Quentin Tarantino, and distributor Harvey Weinstein are all hated by hordes of Academy voters... leaving The Hurt Locker to walk away with the grand prize.

The directors of all 3 films are also nominated for the Best Director trophy... Kathryn Bigelow, the director of The Hurt Locker, is only the fourth woman in the history of the Motion Picture Academy, as well as the second American woman to be honored with this distinction. Should she win the award, Bigelow would be the first woman to actually receive this honor. Will Oscar allow another crack in the glass ceiling tonight?

In the News: Sarah Palin ... AGAIN?

Or perhaps we should say "still." Well, at least this time it is not more Sarah Palin hot photos ;) Sarah Palin is upset about a joke from this week's "Family Guy," in which a character with Down Syndrome claims to be "the daughter of the former governor of Alaska." Andrea Fay Friedman, the actress who did the voice, and who does indeed have Down Syndrome, has now said that Palin just doesn't have a sense of humor.

In the News: Mitt Romney and the Rapper

Rap Star Sky Blu was removed from Air Canada Flight AC552 from Vancouver to Los Angeles after allegedly trying to hit Mitt Romney. Romney claims the rapper attempted to strike him after he was asked to move his seatback. Sky Blu, however, claims that Romney became violent first. And just WHY are people flocking to see this video?

Tiger Woods Press Conference

Anyone get a chance to watch Tiger Woods' press conference? I caught it online at Mahalo and am now reading through the reactions. Sad to watch someone we all thought was the epitome of integrity in sports say that they will now begin to live with integrity. And having had to admit my shortcomings and failures to loved ones as we all do, I can't help but be grateful that those shortcomings were not done on a world stage.
